Rayners to be part of Bafana Bafana

Former South African footballer Andries Sebola has strongly advocated for the inclusion of in-form striker Iqraam Rayners in the Bafana Bafana squad, expressing both surprise and disappointment at head coach Hugo Broos for overlooking the forward.

Sebola’s comments come amid growing debate over South Africa’s attacking options, with several strikers competing for top scorer honours in the Betway Premiership. However, the former player believes Rayners stands above the rest and could significantly strengthen the national team’s frontline.

“ Rayners is better than all those strikers who are competing for the top scorer award,” Sebola said. “I’m surprised and very disappointed with Hugo Broos because he’s not selecting or playing Rayners.”

Rayners, who has been a consistent performer at club level, had previously been sidelined due to medical concerns. However, Sebola insists the striker has fully recovered and is ready to make an impact on the international stage.

“I understand Rayners had some medical problems, but he looks like he has recovered,” Sebola continued. “We need a striker like him. I don’t think it’s a good idea to ignore Rayners. We still need him more than anybody at Bafana Bafana.”

The remarks have reignited discussions around Broos’ squad selection strategy, particularly as South Africa prepares for crucial FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures. While Broos has often emphasized squad balance, tactical discipline, and player fitness, critics argue that proven goal scorers like Rayners should not be overlooked especially when consistency in front of goal remains a concern for the national side.

Rayners’ recent performances have drawn praise from fans and pundits alike, with many echoing Sebola’s sentiments on social media. His ability to convert chances, press defenders, and operate effectively in tight spaces makes him a valuable asset, particularly in high pressure international matches.

Despite the criticism, Broos has remained firm in his approach, often selecting players based on current tactical needs and overall team cohesion rather than individual form alone. However, with public pressure mounting and key fixtures on the horizon, the spotlight is now firmly on the Belgian coach to reconsider his attacking options.

As the debate intensifies, all eyes will be on the next Bafana Bafana squad announcement a moment that could determine whether Rayners finally earns his long awaited recall or continues to be one of the most talked-about omissions in South African football.
